Due to the onslaught of “Arctic”-like weather conditions across the country, it appears we won’t be making the New Years’ journey to the Garden of England. We’re disappointed, but seeings as most of the A roads have been closed and the M20 was said to be down to one lane yesterday, its better safe than sorry.

Further disappointment ensued as my new Airswitch tc that I received for Christmas (made of mouth-blown opaque glass, which is to regular household glass what tissue-paper is to cardboard) has already cracked and shattered with the fragility of a chicken egg. It hasn’t even lasted a week — it was only knocked slightly, a completely freak accident. Gutted.
If I cannot obtain a replacement mouth-blown shell, I shall have to have a rethink and maybe opt for something a little more robust. Such a shame really when I think of how novel it was and how well the design complimented my room.
I avoided placing it high-up and out of the way as you operate it via hand gesture — an impossible task for me if it was placed on a shelf above my eye-line. However, I can’t see new glass surviving if it is kept in its current position on the bedside unit. Which is ironic really as its advertised as follows:

can you not repair it using…oh..some form of specialist glue? Resin springs to mind. Mind you, if it works after I couldn’t say. I looked at those lamps with interest, but…i’m not good at delicate.
I fitted a similar thing last year or the year before to my light switch-one of the touch sensitive/special function dimmer units. It worked fine for..ooh, 30 seconds? Then it fried. I might get another one day and integrate it into my bedside unit to power a “normal” lamp..
Touch-sensitive dimmer? Sounds interesting…I’ll have to Google that…
Unfortunately, attempting to glue the Airswitch would be like trying to Pritt-Stick a broken egg shell — it’s not going to happen. Not the mention the lamp has splintered into cut-throat shards and I don’t fancy losing a digit or six.
Luckily after contacting Mathmos by telephone yesterday they can ship me replacement glass for just over £35. So it’s now a case of waiting for the new glass and figuring out a new, safer home for the lamp. *crosses fingers*
