The Bit Where I Was A Numpty…

Back to this blogging lark after being snowed under with work for another project. I had the bright idea of converting the main site to WordPress2.0 on the basis that the CMS I was previously using (MiniSite) was no longer being supported/developed in any way. (I would include the link, but it seems a little redundant seeings as even the website for it has upped its roots and now all that remains is a notify message and a link to the ex-developers current site). To be honest the project had out-grown MiniSite in any case, and it was becoming cumbersome to manage, or so I thought.

No stranger to WordPress, I thought the conversion would actually save on labour, boy was I wrong! That new “Visual Rich” WYSIWYG editor in v.2.0 is the pits…Anyone know how you turn that bastard thing off?!?! With v.1.5.x you can pretty much mix raw coding in with the very basic/simple/uninterfering WYSIWYG editor and it all goes swimmingly. The “VR WYSIWYG editor in v.2.0 is so invasive! It’s great for newbies/ex-Bloggers etc who require spoon-fed formatting, but you can’t just cut and paste raw (X)HTML in there without it removing and rearranging bits and pieces to suit itself. I know there’s a little HTML button you can click and paste bits and bobs into there, but if you then need to then edit/re-edit that same page, it seems you’re stuck with the “VR WYSIWYG features, arsing about the enter and backspace keys to try and “trick” the editor into generating a <p> block and not a <div> block or vice-versa.

Maybe its because that prior to WordPress, I never worked this way, I’ve always been faithful to good ol’ NotePad. Or maybe, just maybe, I’m being a bit of a numpty and have missed something painfully obvious and have been causing myself no end of grief for undue reason.

EDIT:
Ok, I am OFFICIALLY a numpty. Although I’d set the options to NOT use the “Visual Rich” Editor by default, the check box for it still remained clicked in my own individual profile. I just realised this and have un-checked it now…Well, atleast now I know. And atleast I can now upgrade all my other WordPress–based sites with fear of that damn “VR” editor…If only I’d have known before converting 70+ pages …Bugger…Oh well, gotta laugh really.

Anyway, its all converted now, so I can’t complain too much. I’m also quite pleased that after a lot of fiddling and tweaking, I managed to get the WordPress, Coppermine and PHPBB templates to look near-identical so now that all areas of the site look pretty seamless (I’d always found PHPBB templates to be a bit of a sod and always had to compromise, up to now).

Elsewhere, I’ve been toying with the Night Mode on my phone camera whilst bored. I can’t wait to get a decent Digital SLR and take some decent “night” pics whilst out in a car. I love the movement in the street lights. Excuse the poor quality/resolution of the mobile pics below, but you get the idea, nonetheless.

  • I found, whilst setting up the content on Karl’s website, that even with the rich text editor turned off in the Options area *and* in the individua User’s profile area, WordPress 2.0 STILL interferes with perfectly valid X/HTML and turns it into.. well, not valid X/HTML. It pissed me off.

  • Really? Well then thank God — I thought I was going mad.

    And WTF?!?!

I hope its just v2.0 teething troubles and that v2.1 will be around the corner to sort it out…Until that point, I think I’m going to keep everything else at v1.5.x. I can’t stand the thought of having to endure v2.0 here too…

Thanks for letting me know anyway — I don’t feel half as daft now…

  • I have often wondered, and god knows — I might one day get around to it..what it’d be like if I bunged an old webcam on my dashboard hitched upto my laptop and drove with that on.

I see lots of things when I’m driving, but..well..I’m driving, so I can’t stop and usually have no camera! I’m quite tempted to look at a carputer to be honest, but…a wifi enabled, XP running, vision enabled Astra..? Hmm. I could just look on EBay for a broken laptop I suppose..

  • Wow, I love that idea…Go for it…(though I must admit, the naff ‘80s show NightRider has just sprung to mind! lol)

I think that would great — you could get some potentially amazing stills from that.

I hate my phone camera as its so poor in quality and would probably never capture some of the sunsets I’ve seen and would’ve loved to have photographed whilst out in the car. However, my regular digital camera refuses to function in almost every situation with the Flash turned off — and I refuse to use a camera in a moving car with the Flash turned on, I’d be too scared of blinding oncoming drivers/causing an accident!

  • Hmm. Nightrider eh? Well, it’s automatic..thats partway there.

    Ah-ha! http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/product_info.PHP?products_id=1079

The finishing touch. I seem to recall I have no pics up of my old Dash unit from the Maestro..ah, I do..

THAT was nightrider style..it had a speech unit as well. Distance/fuel/MPG/warnings etc..Great fun. Such gems as driving down the road with mum about 45mph, and all of a sudden the car speakers cut in and a synthesized female voice announces “Warning. Low Oil Pressure. Warning. Brakes Require Service.”

    I still miss that car.

  • LOL — great links…

Synthesized female voice? Fan-bloody-tastic. I want that car!
