The Bit Where They Prolonged The Agony…

Still waiting… With what I’ve heard about current industrial action and (unconfirmed) whispers about the 2006 Budget and its increasing of income tax for those that complete Higher Education courses from today onward, even this date looks unrealistic…

My TT382 Results Are Due on 24th March 2006

  • The current industrial action…as in the rumoured strike actions next week?

quite looking forward to that..I keep getting staff in here..“are you with the union?” “We’re striking next week”.

I’m not in a union, and if I was, I wouldn’t strike. We’ve had it here before. Staff blocking the access road with placards etc..I went to drive through and they started to act nasty..so I reversed back, took my hands off the wheel and put it back in gear.

The way I see it, if I’m being paid to work, then I’ll work. I don’t care what people say..:)

  • “The way I see it, if I’m being paid to work, then I’ll work. I don’t care what people say” — Seems fair enough to me, I’ve never really understood whether all this striking lark benefits anyone in any case… As a student, the only impact it has ever had on me is either a negative one, or none at all… Perhaps this isn’t the case for the staff involved though, else why would they do it?

I’m not sure if it is the same strike, all I have is this in my student inbox:

    23 March 2006
    Industrial Action

Following a national ballot of Association of University Teachers (AUT) and National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE), members have supported a call to strike and other industrial action. The strike took place on the 7th March 2006 however other industrial action will continue until further notice – the focus of this action will be a boycott of assessment activities.

The major impact on students in the near future is likely to be in relation to the grading of your TMAs. We don’t know at this point in time whether or not your tutor will be taking part in the industrial action. If he or she does not participate then you will receive your marked TMA back in the normal way, with both teaching comments and a grade. If he or she does participate and, as advised by the Association of University Teachers, comments on but does not grade your TMA, your tutor will post it to the Assignment Handling Office at Walton Hall in the usual way. We will take a photocopy of the assignment and the PT3 before returning the assignment to you. (We will do this whether the assignment has been submitted on paper or via the eTMA route.

By taking this action we will be able to deal with ungraded TMAs when we are in a position to do so. We are unable to say at this time when that will be, since we do not know how long the dispute will last.

So, now I have to find out if any of my tutors are striking and if my TMAs will be affected… Fun, fun

  • Hmm…I think “our” strike is a UNISON one..I keep getting people coming up to me-“are you striking?”. My usual response is “more so when naked, I’m afraid.”

Even the headmaster laughed. It amuses me that all the “support” staff are running around rubbing their hands at the prospect of a day off…the looks I’m getting when I say I’m coming in — lets say daggers, and thats an understatement.

I’m here to support the kids and the staff..first and foremost. I’ve ignored 2 strikes in my time here..I’ve taught IT before as well, so I daresay if we are down to a skeleton staff I can lend a hand.
