Amongst the fraught tempers, gritted teeth and flying fur that has ensued upon K and I being in constant, unbearably close-quarters over the last 23040+ minutes that she has been officially unemployed, we managed to construct this for my Step-Dad’s birthday:
A D.I.Y. themed novelty birthday cake designed and made by K and I for my Step-Dad.
“Tools” L to R: a Paint Roller, a Tape Measure and DeWalt Drill (without drill-bit)
Also featured at the base of the cake board is a “mini” iced cake featuring novelty “DIY” candles (pliers, hammer, saw etc).
All pieces are made from classic “Birthday” sponge with buttercream and strawberry jam filling, with exception of the Paint-Roller “handle”, which has a creamy chocolate filling.
All decoration is made solely from rolled and/or piped Royal Icing.

We’ve made “novelty” cakes for family members before, but this was our first really big, ambitious project.
There was almost bloodshed and a rather eyebrow-raising incident involving a rolling-pin and a few choice phrases. But we’re all friends again now, albeit a little bit “squidgier” around the edges.
