Amongst the fraught tem­pers, grit­ted teeth and fly­ing fur that has ensued upon K and I being in con­stant, unbear­ably close-quarters over the last 23040+ minutes that she has been offi­cially unem­ployed, we man­aged to con­struct this for my Step-Dad’s birthday:

A D.I.Y. themed nov­elty birth­day cake designed and made by K and I for my Step-Dad.

“Tools” L to R: a Paint Roller, a Tape Meas­ure and DeWalt Drill (without drill-bit)

Also fea­tured at the base of the cake board is a “mini” iced cake fea­tur­ing nov­elty “DIY” candles (pli­ers, ham­mer, saw etc).

All pieces are made from clas­sic “Birth­day” sponge with but­ter­cream and straw­berry jam filling, with excep­tion of the Paint-Roller “handle”, which has a creamy chocol­ate filling.

All dec­or­a­tion is made solely from rolled and/or piped Royal Icing.

We’ve made “nov­elty” cakes for fam­ily mem­bers before, but this was our first really big, ambi­tious project.

There was almost blood­shed and a rather eyebrow-raising incid­ent involving a rolling-pin and a few choice phrases. But we’re all friends again now, albeit a little bit “squidgier” around the edges.
