Remember when I said about the cake and icing?
I present to you our biggest edible project to date:
My sister’s boyfriend turned 21 last weekend and this was part of our gift to him, a novelty birthday cake modelled on his car (a BMW M3).
The only part I take credit for is the Madeira sponge cake with butter-cream and strawberry jam filling that was used for the cake base. The clever, arty stuff that requires talent was 110% down to K. K surpassed herself on this one.
From plan to plate this beast took no less than 5 whole days to accomplish and was constructed using the afore-mentioned cake base, rolled royal icing, a small amount of marzipan and special edible metallic paints that cost an arm, leg and a head.
For the full picture story, including shots of the cake prior to being painted, check out the entire photoset.

That is just too cool! I took cake decorating classes for several years but we never did anything with marzipan or rolled icing, it was all the icing bags with the decorating tips.
You two did a fabulous job!
Meggan:
Really? I’m really surprised by that, I would have thought that a class would cover marzipan modelling as almost all the cake decorating books I’ve ever seen have at least one chapter on it.:nods:
The patches of “grass” were the only piped-icing elements that K used, she tends to get frustrated with icing bags…
Thankies
Wow, it looks fantastic! I love all the little things next to it too (sponge, iPod, etc.).
And I have to say…I really like his car.
How cool. Making a car-cake like that seems so exciting.
