Accessibility
As an individual with various disabilities myself, I feel obligated to try and make the experience here as hassle-free as possible. Of course, there is always room for improvement, but so far the following issues have been addressed:
Text
- Text size may be controlled by the user’s browser to aid those with vision impairment.
- Acronyms and abbreviations are given full-text explanations/alternatives.
Images/Stylesheets
- Pages may be read successfully without stylesheets.
- Colour-schemes used provide sufficient contrast for viewing by those with black and white screens or colour vision deficits.
- Text equivalents for images and photographic elements are provided.
Audio/Video
- All blog content in the form of “voice posts” or (short) “video posts” are provided with a full written transcript (excluding songs/music videos) to aid those that choose to not download the media files and/or those with hearing impairments.
- I am currently working on it so that longer “video posts” will have full subtitles in the near future.
Links/Navigation
- Navigation is used in a consistent manner throughout the site.
- This site uses Access Keys to help navigate to the three main areas of the site, see the next section for more information on this site’s use of Access Keys.
- The site may be successfully navigated using the “TAB” and “SHIFT” keys.
- Link identification does not solely rely on colour.
- Links are given meaningful names that are understandable when read out of context, when this is not the case, meaningful titles are provided.
- All links open in the current browser window by default.
- To help identify the nature of links:
- All external links are denoted with a little green arrow:
. - All wishlist/Amazon links are denoted with a little green gift icon:
. - All links to MP3 files are denoted with a little green MP3 icon:
. - Non-link, printable characters (surrounded by spaces) are provided to help distinguish adjacent links.
Access Keys
If using a PC, Access Key navigation is activated by pressing ALT and the access key together. If you are using a Mac, Access Key navigation is activated by pressing CTRL and the access key together.
- Key B to access the “Blog” section
- Key P to access the “Photos” section
- Key A to access the “About” section
Are you using Firefox 2.0? Do the Access Keys not work for you?
If so, try this fix:
Type about:config into the address bar in your Firefox browser, press Enter. Scroll down to ui.key.contentAccess, right-click it and select “Modify”. Set the value to 4 and click “OK”.
Return to http://claire.nu and you will find all access keys operate as previously described.
Testing
The site has been successfully cross-browser tested on Windows XP OS using Internet Explorer 6 & 7, Firefox 1.9.X & 2.0.X, Opera 7 & 9.X and Safari 3 [beta] (minimum resolution: 1024×768). It has also been cross-browser tested on Mac OSX v10.4 using Firefox 2.0.X, Camino 1.6.X and Opera 9.2X & 9.6X.
The website has been sucessfully user-tested by individuals that possess sight impairments, motor impairments and/or colour vision deficits.
Overall, this website complies completely with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0: Priorities 1, 2 and 3. It also complies to the criteria and testing outlined in the Colorblind Web Page Filter.
A mobile edition of the blog has been provided for those using handheld/alternative devices.
