Wheelistically “Free Wheel” Appeal

An Update

Nine days after I launched this appeal, thanks to a Good Samaritan and countless others, I was able to purchase a FreeWheel™. You can read about their generosity, here.

The Original Appeal

Welcome to the Wheelistically “Free Wheel” Appeal.

I am raising money in order to purchase a FreeWheel™ attachment for my wheelchair. Disabled since birth, I have Cerebral Palsy [Spastic Diplegia] and (secondary) neuromuscular Scoliosis and have been a full-time wheelchair user for over twelve years. You can read how my Disabilities affect me, in more detail, here.

Like most specialist equipment designed for those with disabilities, the FreeWheel™ doesn’t come cheap. This Appeal began as a result of being unable to gain any financial help from Social Care Services or my local NHS Wheelchair Service, despite my best efforts. Also, many sources of funding in the third sector will only provide grants to existing registered charities and/or community groups, not individuals in need, such as myself. You can read the full back-story, here.

I am raising money through the sale of my photography and self-designed greetings cards*, with 100% of the proceeds going towards funding a FreeWheel™ and through any donations made online directly to the appeal. If you can and want to help, please do.

FreeWheel™

The FreeWheel™

The FreeWheel™

The FreeWheel™ is a lightweight, adaptive wheelchair accessory that “quickly clamps to the footrest of a rigid-frame wheelchair and allows you to push over surfaces that would typically be impossible”.

With a FreeWheel™, I finally have a chance at being able to do some of things things that, up until now, I have never been able to do: Take my dogs on a walk through a field, negotiate curbs with fear of tipping or falling, easily cross areas that are grassy, muddy, uneven or full of stones. These are all things that so many people take for granted and yet, they pose a very large and very real barrier to both my independence and my inclusion in both family activities and in the wider society.

I’ve spent years of my youth housebound and I want so desperately lead an active, independent life befitting my twenty-five years; I’m a young, determined and confident young person, I want to be out there, taking part in life and all that it has to offer. Adapting my wheelchair with the FreeWheel™ will further allow me to do that.

Thank you for reading, I really appreciate your time.
